Some have called Uptown the "Brooklyn of Chicago," but Chicagoans know Uptown most definitely has its own unique history and character.
Situated just north of Lake View along the lake, Uptown is the perfect mix of old and new. One-hundred-year-old stone homes sit next to fortress-like U-shaped 6 flats; the (also) century-old Riviera Theatre and Aragon Ballroom still host live concerts; and the Green Mill, the oldest continuously-run jazz club in the country, is still very much thriving and still very serious about its music.
But Uptown is not just about history. The neighborhood is relishing in a resurgence. The $203 million Red Line Wilson Station modernization project, slated for completion by the end of 2017, is the largest construction project in the CTA's history. Argyle Street has been rebuilt as the city's first shared, pedestrian-friendly street and now hosts outdoor eateries and events. A transit-oriented condo development, a new construction high-rise, retrofitting residential rehabs and new commercial space are all in various stages of planning and development throughout the neighborhood. Even Montrose Dog Beach, recently named the Best Dog Friendly Beach in the country by USA Today, is being upgraded with dog-washing stations and a cafe.
